Start with your undertone
Skin has either a warm undertone (golden, peachy tones), a cool undertone (pink, bluish tones) or a neutral mix of the two. The undertone does not change with the seasons, even though your complexion does.
A simple check: hold a piece of silver and a piece of gold up to your face in daylight. If your skin looks freshest and clearest next to gold, you are most likely warm. Next to silver, you are typically cool. Warm undertones are often flattered by honey, caramel, copper and golden brown, while cool undertones tend to carry ash, beige and dark brown with a cool cast best.
Take your hair's starting point into account
Your hair as it is today sets the limits for what can be achieved in one session. If it is already coloured dark, the colour cannot simply be lifted with a new colour – it has to be lightened, and that takes time and must be judged against the strength of the hair.
If your hair is virgin, on the other hand, a great deal can be done in one go. That is why Trine always asks about your colour history before making a plan – including box colour and henna, which behave differently from salon colour.
Choose according to how much upkeep you want
Upkeep is the factor people most often forget. A full colour that is markedly lighter or darker than your own requires a regrowth appointment every four to six weeks. A balayage or babylights can go three to four months, because the regrowth is soft.
If you would rather let your hair look after itself for months at a time, talk to us about techniques with a soft transition rather than a full colour. If you want a bold, uniform colour, expect more frequent visits.
- Low upkeep: balayage, faceframe, soft root colour
- Medium: babylights and highlights with a toner halfway through
- High: full colour in a shade far from your own, and all strong fashion reds
Book a colour consultation if you are unsure
A colour consultation costs DKK 259 and is the best money you can spend if you are considering a bigger change. We look at the condition of your hair, go through your pictures and agree on shades and a realistic number of steps before you book the treatment itself.
It also gives you an honest answer as to whether your dream colour can be reached in one session – or whether it should be split up, so the hair stays healthy along the way.
